How to Shop the Fall Farmers' Market

How to Shop the Fall Farmers' Market

The produce at a fall farmers' market reflects the colors of the autumn leaves. Yellow peppers, red pomegranates, orange pumpkins and persimmons and golden-skinned squash are just some of the treats available. Depending on weather, many farmers' markets remain open through Thanksgiving for your holiday shopping needs.

Tips:

Most farmers' markets remain open, rain or shine, during their scheduled months of operation.

Steps:

  1. Find out the time, day and location of the farmers' market by checking the local newspaper or telephone directory or calling the city offices or chamber of commerce.
  2. Arrive at the market early, if possible, for the best selection and freshest produce.
  3. Bring a jacket and an umbrella just in case of inclement weather.
  4. Bring small bills and change.
  5. Bring a sturdy bag or cart for all your purchases.
  6. Place a cooler with some ice in the trunk of your car. You can use it to store any perishable items if the weather is warm or if you won't be going home quickly.
  7. Take a stroll around the market when you arrive to see what's available. Different growers often offer the same produce.
  8. Expect to choose from produce such as peppers, squash, eggplant, broccoli, cauliflower, salad greens, nuts, persimmons and pomegranates.
  9. Look for specialty products such as baked goods, vinegar, oils, sauces, cheese, eggs, jams, jellies and chutneys, along with fresh cut flowers and potted plants and herbs.
  10. Look for specialty services such as knife sharpening, beverage carts and information tables.
  11. Enjoy entertainment and special events such as cooking demonstrations and guest chef appearances. Children's activities may be available.
  12. Ask the market manager if you can't find what you're looking for. Talk to the growers and vendors if you need information on buying or storing their produce or other items.
